Out and About Local Attractions in Perthshire, Central Scotland
As well as some of the best adventure activities to be found anywhere in Scotland, Perthshire has both the oldest and the smallest distilleries in Scotland – Glenturret (Famous Grouse) in Crieff and Edradour in Pitlochry. Perth is home to the Perth Concert Hall, Perth Theatre and Caithness Glass Visitor Centre.
Just a short distance from Perth lies Scone Palace, the original home of Scotland`s Stone of Destiny.
Perthshire is known as “Big Tree Country”. See the widest conifer in Britain – a giant wellingtonia – 11 metres in girth and 39.5 metres high at Cluny House Gardens near Aberfeldy.
Visit the ospreys at Loch of the Lowes Wildlife Centre near Dunkeld.
There are breathtaking views around every corner in Perthshire however there are few that can equal that of Queens View on B8019 “Road to the Isles”. Loch Tummel stretches out beneath and Glencoe can be seen in the far off distance.
Re-live the iron age by visiting The Crannog Centre near Kenmore at the east end of Loch Tay.
The highest hedge in the world – The great hedge of Meikleour forms an incredible living wall of beech trees – 30 metres high and 530 metres long.
The oldest living thing in Europe – “The Fortinghall Yew” estimated to be between three and nine thousand years old.
Highland Games from May to September are held all over Perthshire.
There are too many castles to list however Blair castle and Glamis Castle are two not to be missed.
Ben Lawers National Nature Reserve – Ben Lawers is Perthshires highest mountain with views from the Atlantic to the North Sea, superb mountain scenery with ranger led walks in the summer months. One of the top places in Britain for mountain plants.
